My parents used to take me to J-Town to reward me for good behaviour. I always loved this place — not too large, but it felt a little bit like a culinary playground with its amazing bakery, curry, meat shop, sushi stand, and mini-fish market. On this trip, we ended up scoring some amazing lunch specials at the meat market (WAGYU BEEF DON) and By the Sea.

Katsu Tuna Don!

Katsu Tuna Don!

Hefty chunks of tuna with a thin deep-fried layer. Enveloped by a steamed egg, scallions, and marinated onions, this is the kind of meal that just makes you feel comfort as you devour it.

This was their ‘toro’ don. Considering it was less than $10, I doubt it was toro. Probably hamachi or BC tuna? I bought a little container of salmon roe to add more colour and deliciousness to this dish. Call it the DPO Special, if you will!

My dad scored the best meal of the day. He somehow managed to get this wagyu beef don, which had layer upon layer of fatty, juicy beef on top of it. It was seriously incredible and I think the only reason he got so much was he was either the last person there (I think they stop serving lunch specials at 2 or 3) or they just really liked him. I was fortunate enough to steal a few pieces from him and it just melted in my mouth! It had the ideal ratio of fat to meat too. Just thinking about it makes me salivate.

TL;DR: Reasonably priced lunch specials and the potential to get real lucky with some quality food for prices that are an absolute steal! What’s not to love other than their somewhat small parking lot and lack of seating (because people loiter for way too long on those seats?!)
